July 7, 2015: Today evening was the 23rd episode of An Author's Afternoon at The Taj Bengal. Author Kishwar Desai was the chief guest in coversation with Suman Mukhopadhyay. It was a well attended event and the first one to be addressed by Samrat Dutta, the new General Manager of Taj Bengal. Kishwar is the wife of Lord Meghnad Desai and is based in London.
With Kishwar Desai
Suman did a good job engaging Kishwar, a former print and broadcast journalist with NDTV who later took to writing books, into sharing varied aspects of her life and work with the audience.
Kishwar's first novel Witness the Night won the Costa Book Award in 2010 for best first novel and since then has been translated into 25 languages. Her critically acclaimed novel Origins of Love was published in 2012. She also wrote a biography – Darlingji: The True Love Story of Nargis and Sunil Dutt.
In all, she has written four novels the latest one The Sea of Innocence was recently published in India and would soon be published in UK and Australia. Whenever I am in London, I always meet, among others, Kishwar and Lord Desai. The last time I had met the couple at the Asia House over tea.
The Author's Afternoon series has become very successful and popular. Early next month, Lord Desai and Kishwar would join in for another event in Jaipur.
In the evening, I hosted a small dinner at home for Helen LaFave, the outgoing US Consul General in Kolkata. She would be leaving the city soon. Kishwar and few other friends also joined in.
